“A borough-based health alliance has launched a new initiative in the battle against Staten Island’s opioid crisis, one that is aimed at the legal prescribers of the very drugs that are snaring so many in addiction.

The goal of the Safe Prescriber Pledge campaign is lofty — to get every prescriber of medication on Staten Island to sign the pledge and adopt guidelines that support the safe prescription of addictive drugs.

The group behind the initiative, the Staten Island Performing Provider System (PPS), hopes to dramatically reduce the medical community’s reliance on opioids; according to a release from the PPS, data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse shows that ‘more than 75 percent of people who go on to develop a substance use disorder start with medication prescribed to them by their primary care provider.'”
